Just Married?

If you’ve recently tied the knot—congratulations! While you’re settling into newlywed life, don’t forget a few key tax-related updates that can help avoid surprises come filing time.

✅ 1. Report Any Name Changes

If you changed your name, let the Social Security Administration (SSA) know. Your name must match SSA records for your tax return to be processed correctly.

  • File Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card)

  • Or visit your local SSA office

🏡 2. Update Your Address

If you've moved:

  • Notify the U.S. Postal Service

  • Update your address with employers and financial institutions

  • File Form 8822 to update your address with the IRS

💼 3. Check Your Tax Withholding

You and your spouse should each update your Form W-4 with your employers within 10 days of the change. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to make sure the right amount is being withheld—especially if both of you work.

📄 4. Review Your Filing Status

You’ll now file as either:

  • Married Filing Jointly (usually the most beneficial)

  • Married Filing Separately (can make sense in specific situations)

Run both scenarios or talk with your tax professional to decide what works best for you.

🚨 5. Watch for Scams

The IRS does not contact taxpayers by phone, text, email, or social media to demand information or payment. If you get a suspicious message, don’t respond—and report it at IRS Identity Theft Central.

Have questions or need help updating your info? I’m happy to walk you through the steps and make sure you're set up for a smooth first tax season as a married couple.
