IRS Identity PIN: What It Is & Why It Helps
If you want an extra layer of security against tax-related identity theft, the IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is one of the simplest steps you can take.
🧾 What’s an IP PIN?
An IP PIN is a unique 6-digit code that only you and the IRS know. It prevents fraudsters from filing a tax return in your name—even if you’re not required to file.
🌐 How to Get One
Log into your IRS Online Account (or create one)
Request the IP PIN under your profile
You’ll need to verify your identity during setup
Once enrolled, the IRS will send you a new PIN each year
📬 Important: Keep the IRS Letter
Each year, the IRS will mail you a notice with your new IP PIN. Keep it in a safe spot—your tax preparer will need the PIN to e-file your return. Without it, the IRS will reject the return.
👥 Who Can Get One?
Anyone with a Social Security Number or ITIN
Available even if you live abroad
Optional for most taxpayers, but highly recommended—especially if you’ve experienced identity theft
🚫 Watch for Scams
The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN by phone, email, text, or social media. If you receive such a request, it’s a scam.
